STUKAS ATTACK
These are images of "Stukas Attack," a children's board game similar to Chinese checkers. The object of the game is to move one’s pieces to the other side of the board (the enemy airbase) and back, avoiding enemy searchlights (in yellow) and flak (in red) along the way.
The cover of the game shows a fleet of planes attacking a city with bombs and missiles. Boats are also shown to the side of the city on fire and sinking. The board has two regions next to the two regions represented in the picture, ground/water and air, which are also the two factions that the players can play. Because game is marketed towards children, the intent of the producer is to make people comfortable with war and violence from an early age or make light of the war with a game. A subject as violent as bombing a city doesn't strike me as being a subject of play, especially in the 1940s. This does raise the question on what the effect of violent video games today will be on children during the next war (on the scale of WWII).
